Parasites

posted by Westward Animal Hospital    |   June 30, 2014 10:15

There are so many parasites out there that we have to be wary about.  One of the biggest is worms.  There are 4 main types of worms to watch out for here and they include Whipworms, Roundworms, Hookworms, and Heartworms.

Whipworms  Roundworms  and Hookworms    are all transferred by feces from infected pets.  They can live in the environment for a long time and your pet may still pick up the eggs after the feces are gone.

Heartworms are transferred by mosquitoes which we definetly have a lot of!  Although we do not see a lot of heartworms here in Saskatchewan they are out there and if we can prevent them from becoming common here that would be great.

All four of these worms can be easily prevented with prescription dewormer that you can do year round.  It's easy, just 1 flavored tablet once a month will keep these parasites at bay.

There is a fifth worm that we see here called a tapeworm These are transmitted by rodents and are more common in pets that hunt.  They are treated with a different type of prescription dewormer that you can get from us.  It is usually a one time dose, but if your pet is hunting all the time it would't hurt to do it monthy as well.
